Asking a doctor i shadowed for med school rec letter?

about a year and a half ago i shadowed the chief of surgery at my instate med school for 3 weeks. now I am applying med school and I am wondering if I will receive any benefit by asking him for a rec letter. I am applying to the same in state school so I thought it may be advantageous for him to provide me with a rec letter
